My Dad has most of the story straight but the halibut fight only lasted a few minutes. It would have ended quick if it didn't flop out of the kayak the first time I brought it on board(still hooked). When I brought it on board the second time I decided to leave the gaff in it until I was able to put it down below. I've brought halibut up to 22lbs onboard my kayak but this little buggar wasn't going to go out as easy as some of it's larger ancestors have.
On my third cast after launching I had a halibut that looked about 3' follow my swim bait to the yak and slam it right at the boat but unfortunately I missed it. On my next cast I was bent. It felt like a decent fish but I knew it wasn't the fish that chased my plastic the cast before. Up came a WSB that was close but not close enough to gaff and I only carry a net to meet the requirement of the law. I decided to throw it on and measure it but the hook pulled and away it went. I was on the water for over an hour before my Dad decided he was going make the trip out. There was some good sized surf but the interval was far enough apart to make a safe launch and landing.
By the time he made it out I had caught and released about 6 or 7 sand bass (mostly small 12-14"). When my Dad got out there the conditions had gone down hill. No current leading to no action. After about an hour my Dad was prepared to call it a day. I kept telling him there are bigger fish in the area and I was trying to convince him to be patient. I told him all we need are some conditions. If we could get a little current this is going to happen. The wind and current both began to move. I hooked a very solid fish on the swim bait that dragged me uphill in the wind and current right back to the reef. I could feel it in the structure and at that it immediately popped. I knew it was no halibut. I really felt it was a blackie. Then about 15 minutes later I hooked another solid fish I thought at first it might be a halibut because it was initially pulling straight but when it ran to structure I began to think blackie again. I eventually got popped off in the rock. Then my father got a juvenile blackie which supported my thoughts about the two fish I had lost. The sandbass went wide open with the conditions but no more blackies after that. Landed dry. See you guys on the water.
