We paddled all the way around the point and shortly after we got there(10 minutes) Jerry jr .decided it was too risky and we went back to the(beachward) other side. The swells were large with large surf breaking on the rocks(around the point!)There was even a lone surfer at the base of the cliffs.Weird! The wind had begun to pickup ,blowing to the Northwest or diagonally offshore seaward. We paddled straight into the wind to get back around and headed back in the direction of the beach to fish the usual kelpy areas. My good old Fish n Dive could never keep up with Jerry's skinny Scupper Pro! Even less into the wind! But it's comfy and stable! The wind dropped when we got back around but we still had to stay around the seaward edges of the kelp because the swells were quite large and there was a strong shore break along the bottom of the cliffs. The fishing wasn't stunning but slowly productive. I first picked up a 3-4 lb Calico on a cotee head with a chartreuse green swimbait,(4"). The next fish was what you dream about,a personal first for me,a grass bass(brown rockfish) about 3 lbs.Jerry said they're also known as gopher cod.Taken on a whole squid !Good eating, had it for dinner! About an hour later I pulled up a sand bass about 3-1/2 lbs . This one was on the Cotee head /swimbait,with a strip of squid added to the hook. That was it for me for the day. But there were the usual missed hits(a lot),the lost in kelp fish, and small fish trying to get hooked. Jerry Jr."s action for the day was 1 large calico and at least 3 smaller sand bass. We launched punching thru small(1-1/2'-2') surf and also made dry landings! A nice day on the water,if not super exciting.
