I talked to someone at my local kayak dealer and he said that unless the scratches threaten your hull's integrity (i.e. are or may soon leak) there's really no reason to smooth them out. Ocean Kayaks are made to be scratched. The risk of damaging your hull with too much heat is possible and the scratches have little impact on the kayak's performance. The only reason to do it would be cosmetic. My Caper gets dragged over rock s too and has plenty of battle scars, but it's still solid as can be........
