The weather cooperated with us, offering T-shirt weather all day. The fishing was a little slow for the area yet still yielded enough action to create some friendly competition. Water movement was minimal in the morning and the wind no where to be found. The bite seemed to improve once the water movement and breeze picked up in the late am. The first angler to pull in for weighin was Bing Blaydes. You could see the grin on his face from 100 yards away. He had something good. Nice halibut. We didn't measure it but it appeared to be at least 30 inches. It weighed in at 12lbs 8oz. *Bing "the Halibut King" Blaydes, a late sign in, showed up with his new Scupper Pro he purchased the night before. He was enthusiastic but like many, was just coming down to hang out with a bunch of yak fishing enthusiasts with no expectations other than to have a good time. He'd never caught a halibut from a kayak and seemed to be looking to just get his new kayak in the water for a trial run. 3 other anglers caught halibut but of course the fish to beat for the money was Bing's. Legal halibuts were brought in by Paul L., Chuck L., and Kevin S. but all were under 10lbs. Paul L. came in 2nd place and received a Gift Certificate from Hook 1 Kayak Fishing Gear. The bass division was a little tricky. You had to keep the bass alive through a pretty decent paddle back to Baby Beach for weigh in. All the bass weighed in at Baby Beach were revived and safely released. Well done! Andy "Iceman" Allen and his son pulled up early in their Pro II Tandem with what turned out to be the bass of the day. A 2.6 lb spottie caught on a harbor troll. I don't think anyone who knows Andy was the least bit surprised. That was one nice fish especially considering the fishing conditions. Andy weighed in one more fish later that day to seal 3rd place. 1st and 2nd place of the Bass division went to Greg J. and Ryan K. They fish this area fairly regularly and definately had the home court advantage in the bass division. Greg took the cash with a combined weight total of 4lbs 7oz and Ryan received a Gift Certificate from Hook 1 Kayak Fishing Gear with a combined 3 bass weight total of 4lbs 4oz. I brought a box of several goodies, some of which were contributed by Kayak Sportfishing and some courtesy of a few Kayak Sportfishing sponsors (Scotty, Luhr-Jensen, Cetacea and Malibu Kayaks). We passed the box around in the order of placement standings to let the angler choose what they wanted. If you turned in one fish for weigh in, you got something from the prize box. *I can't speak for everyone, but I myself had a great time. I was finally able to meet several kayak anglers I've been reading about on the message boards for years. As well, I was able reacquaint myself with people I hadn't fished with for too long. One of these days I won't be surprised anymore by the amount of cool people I meet through this sport. I met several yesterday and look forward to fishing with them in the future. A special thanks goes to Mark and Karen from Hook 1 for helping me host the event. Keith Martin from FishingKayaks.net for contributing his help, support and fish scale. Jeff "Rhyno" Krieger for bringing the tunes and Weber. And Kevin "Yakslam" Joyce for his help with organizing and weighing in fish. I was also touched by the amount of friends from the other web sites that have been helping with the continued growth of the sport: Plastic Navy and Big Water's Edge. jas
