This is an open invitation to anyone with at least intermediate paddling skills. If you plan on attending, please check the forums and/or email us just in case we call the paddle off due to poor conditions. This won't be a rain or shine type of paddle. If the weather outlook isn't good, we'll postphone it. We're counting on a good weather window and if we don't get it, we'll try for a later date.

The Palos Verdes Penninsula is one of the most beautiful coastal stretches of Southern California. The area receives very little fishing pressure and is known for its abundant kelp beds and large bass. White sea bass are also known to like this area. You can click on the link below for some of the amazing aerial photos taken by the California Coastal Records Project.

We should have the wind at our backs from mid to late morning on, making the paddle a little easier for the rest of the leg.

Here's the plan per one Paul L. (aka PAL) one of the coordinators:
We'll be launching from King Harbor in Redondo and landing 10.8 miles later at Abalone. I'm excited that this trip has finally come together.

We will paddle from King Harbor to Abalone Cove, a distance of 10.8 mi. Expect an uphill carry from the beach to the parking lot at the landing site. If you have wheels or a kayak cart they would probably be helpful. Don't worry, we will make it work.

Important! Be sure to check this website the night before the trip. Jason will make a go / no-go call based on the weather forecast. Again, please honestly evaluate your skill level before commiting to this trip - there are few "bail-out" beaches once we get to Palos Verdes.

We will work the shuttle in the same fashion as for the New Year's bay to bay trip. Please bring your gear to the launch site and have it ready to go by 6:00 a.m. Someone needs to volunteer to stay with the gear at the launch site. At 6:00 a.m. the rest of us will convoy to the landing site where we will park. Since I have a minivan I will shuttle people back to launch site where I will park. I can carry six people plus myself in relative comfort. At the bay to bay, we managed nine! Once we are all back at the launch site and ready to go we'll set off. That should be at about 7:00 a.m. After the paddle, I’ll need someone to carry me and my gear back to the launch site. If a benefactor steps forward to help us get our kayaks from the landing site to the launch site we will instead meet at Abalone Cove.

Directions to the landing site: from the 405 freeway exit at Hawthorne Boulevard and drive south to Palos Verdes Drive South. Go left to Abalone Coast and Shoreline Park, 5970 Palos Verdes Drive South. There is a parking fee.

Traveling south on the 405 Freeway
Shortly after passing the 105 Freeway interchange (Los Angeles Airport), take the Inglewood Avenue exit and turn right, then go south about 2 miles to 190th Street and turn right. Then go west about 2 miles until 190th (Herondo) Street dead ends into Harbor Drive and turn left

Traveling north on the 405 Freeway
Shortly after passing the 110 Freeway interchange (City of Carson), take the Crenshaw Boulevard exit and make two lefts in a row, then go south about 1/2 mile to 190th Street and turn right. Then go west about 4 miles until 190th (Herondo) Street dead ends into Harbor Drive and turn left

Traveling west on the 91 Freeway
Go to the very end where it will merge into Artesia Boulevard and continue west for about 2 miles to Crenshaw Boulevard and turn left, then go south about 1/4 mile to 190th Street and turn right. Then go west about 4 miles until 190th (Herondo) Street dead ends into Harbor Drive and turn left

Which ever way you're coming from, as you're traveling down Harbor Drive, look for Captain Kids (big sign). Parking lot entrance is just north of Captain Kids. If you're planning to stay parked here, be sure to bring some money for parking. Though like PAL stated, the best thing to do is to drop the gear off at King Harbor, we'll have at least one person stay to watch it, and then we'll drive to the landing area at Abalone to park our cars. Paul has offered to drive those of us parking at Abalone a ride back to King Harbor. If you do decide to stay parked at King Harbor, don't forget to write "hand launch" on your ticket when you're leaving the lot...saves a few bucks.

We're launching from the hand/small boat launch. It's adjacent to the seaside lagoon and sportfishing pier.
