: I can not decide on the type (sit-on-top or closed) kayak to buy for fishing. I would be using it 99% of the time on smaller lakes and streams. I want to make sure its comfortable (I have a lousy lower back) and that it is steady enough to fish from. All suggestions are welcome on the type, brand and model that is best.
: Thanks
Dear Jason:
I'm an experienced fly fisherman and have also owned a kayak. Recently, I decided to combine the two sports. My wife did a lot of research and we finally settled on a Wilderness model.
We drove to a dealer and looked at several models. We settled on a wilderness 100 for several reasons:
1 - It is fairly lightweight (50 lbs.) so I can car top it by myself (I'm 62 years old).
2 - It's quite stable, and like you, I confine myself to small lakes and ponds.
3 - Our dealer's package included a back cushion and a cushioned seat. However, if you have real back problems, I would suggest a better seat (availabel from about $100 to $200).
4 - The total upgraded package was $599 (the kayak, seat and back and a lighter oar).
I would highly recommed the Wilderness 100. I've had many hours of enjoyment and successful fishing.
