My friend and I fished San Diego Bay yesterday in his boat. We got there at 9:30 A.M. and launched from Shelter Island. The high tide wasn't untill 1:48 P.M. and it was only a 4.5 ft tide. The tide conditions weren't the best but we didn't care if we caught anything. My friend Steve had been sick with a cold for 3 weeks and and he hadn't been out fishing in a month. It was cloudy but there was no wind. We headed out to the mouth of the bay by the bouys for some drifting with frozen anchovies and bucktail jigs. We fished there for a while for nada. Then we headed to the bait reciever. We were using frozen anchovies and deep diving plugs. We trolled around the bait recievers and drifted next to them for nada. We didn,t even see very many fish on the fishfinder, and the ones we did see didn't want to bite. It was about noon so we went and had lunch. After lunch we went to the entrance of Glorita Bay about 100 yards out from the Navy Seal base. We have had pretty good luck there in the past. Steve was drifting with a frozen Anchovie on the bottem and I was throwing a 4" rootbeer Power Grub on a 1/4 oz leadhead tipped with squid. We were in 10ft of water. I caught and released a small spotted bay bass. Steve caught 2 spottys on the 'chovies. One of them was about 13". Then somthing hit Steve's 'chovie hard. He faught it for a while and brought up a 23" halibut. This went into the cooler. We drifted the area till it was almost dark. We caught and released 2 more spotties and a small shark. This area is easily accesable with a kayak. I'm going back there probably on Sunday. You can launch from Tidelands Park in Coranado. It is only a short easy paddle to some pretty good fishing. When there is a good tide movement (6+ ft.) then this place can go off! It's not uncommen for people to catch 30+ bass here in a few hours on a good day. Before it got dark we went back to Shelter Island near the launch ramp so we didn't have to travel too far in the dark. We decided to let the traffic die down. We started drifting about 50 yards off the Shelter Island Pier in about 40 ft of water with frozen anchovies on the bottem with 10 lb test spinning outfits. We fished for about an hour after dark for 3 keeper sand bass. There was hardly any boat traffic and the skyline of San Diego looked awsome. We called it a day and headed back in. Not a bad day on the water. 6 spotted Bay Bass (released) 1 small shark (released) 1 23" Halibut (for fish tacos) and 3 keeper Sand Bass (for more fish tacos).

P.S.
All the places I mentioned are doable in a kayak. The mouth of San Diego Bay can get a little sketchy though. When there is a big tidal swing the current really gets ripping at the mouth. It can be a real mother paddeling back against that heavy current. throw in some wind on top of that and you'll wish you had an Evenrude strapped to your kayak. It's not that bad farther in the bay though.
