I thread my line through it and tie a treble hook on so it's resting in the tentacles. I use large single hooks when I'm catching to much grass or too many of the wrong species (or shorts). I usually rig them with a dodger (various sizes depending on the current; though you don't have to use one to catch fish). Ball bouncing can be effective but it takes more work than a torpedo (with just enough weight to keep it on the bottom). You "can" catch Halibut, White Sea Bass, bass and a few others with the squid. In So Cal, I think your best bet would be w/ the halibut.
I prefer a 3 way swivel rig when I'm using these (click the link below for one example). Though you can use them w/ a Carolina rig, dropper, etc; There's also a ball bouncing diagram/text provided by Luhr-Jensen in the tackle n' tips section. The diagram suggests up 1- 2 pound balls. I'd say make the ball ratio from 8oz up to 1lb.
