Last night I had a great idea. I bought an accuframe for a penn 140. I also have a penn 200 and the AF 140 is supposed to fit on the 200. So I took my 200 apart. The one thing that really stinks is that you cannot see behind the bridge. Once I started to remove the bridge and gear sleeve, the springs worked perfectly and jumbled all the parts around before I could get a good look at how the assembly is done. I am now an expert on every moving part in this style reel. I got it back together and everything works great, but it took a long time. I am still laughing about the whole episode. Now that I have accomplished this feat; I can probably change the washers, clean and lube in under 20 minutes. The dog pin and dog spring were the fly in the ointment near the end. When it was all back together on the table I had no extra parts.
This was a great education process as now I understand much better how the drags works and I can service the reel myself. I might be more tempted to pick up an older reel that needs some service. I could not figure out how to get the chrome rim off the crank side of the reel and Big Al clued me into the quick spool change feature of these reels (that I never use). When I got home tonight I had to put it together and here is a picture.
The quick change spool option is pretty cool. I have never needed it since I usually carry a couple different rod reel combos, but the flexibility has great potential and some how I just never thought about it or gave it attention.
The picture is my 200. I had a better 200, but lost it to Neptune. It will be interesting to see how this frame will affect the the reel.
I probably will put one on my 500. Any one who knows anything about which are the better drag washers to upgrade to please post.
