: They do not sink you, they do not "fill with water," they do not hamper you in swimming or in any other way. They act as a help to swimming, making you somewhat bouyant. Please read the information on the message boards and on the Coast Guard site. Professional fishermen wear waders. FAST flowing stream fishermen wear waders. ESPN and others have done tests ON TV to prove they are totally safe.No one has EVER drowned anywhere because of waders. It is a myth, a wives tale that waders are dangerous in the surf or anywhere else. They are not, and that is a proven fact.Do what you want, but if you give up one bit of comfort and safety by not wearing waders because of an old wives tale mindlessly posted over and over again by the uninformed, then you have done yourself a disservice.Waders are safe, warm and DRY, they protect you not only from the elements and if you fall in and have to swim, but they are required for fishing in some lakes in Southern California, so why limit yourself? The people wear them back east because the AIR AND THE WATER ARE REALLY REALLY COLD and it's rough and dangerous except mid-summer. They wear waders because THEY ARE SAFER AND WARMER.Not because they "wade a lot" LoL! However, good point, with waders you are set to go surf-fishing, stream fishing etc.quietman

Don't waders go up to your chest usually? If you were to roll around in the surf, how is it that they wouldn't fill up with water. I may be wrong, but don't most waders resemble overalls? I haven't used waders but it would seem to me that they would easily fill up if you were to wipe out in the surf. I'm not saying you would sink like an anchor. Just that with a lot of water in your waders, you'd be at best bobbing around like a cork making it difficult to get back to your kayak, get back on your kayak (a lot of extra weight) or maneuver to shore. That is unless you're in great shape, which sounds like you are.

The pro fishermen might wear waders, but they aren't fishing from kayaks. I'm not sure I understood the example.
