: Hey Guys, Great sight. I'm new to kayak fishing and I'm hoping some of you more experienced folks could answer 2 questions for me. Wearing my 2/3mm surf wet suit out on the kayak gets very uncomfortable. What do you wear top and bottom in the winter in So.Cal? The second is about bait tank capacity. What size tank, gallon wise, do feel is large enough for the local macks/deans/smelt fishing? I have a fish 'n dive so weight, up to a point, isn't an issue. I'm not new to either paddling or fishing but, put the 2 together and I feel like I could use some advice. Thanks, MIke
Hello Mike. In my humble opinion there is something different about the kayak fisherman. First of all, we are our own captian. We move when we want to move, we fish where we want to fish and nobody is our boss out there. You are best served asking many opinions and then, making your own judgement.
I like wearing bathing trunks most of the season with booties. I ALWAYS wear a life jacket in and out of the surf zone no matter what "new commer" advice I hear on the steet and the web. As far as staying warm, I don't care about feeling "warm" going through the surf or comming in. In both cases I am paddleing hard while focusing on getting to the beach saftly.
My warm gear is in the dry bag inside the hatch were I can put it on once I am outside the surfzone or on the beach. I like "Thermox." I bought mine at a surf shop and it is a pullover with a hood. The inside is fleece and the outside is like a wetsuit. It is very warm and is still comfortable when wet.
If you can't find thermox, keep a hooded sweatshirt and wind breaker in a drybag. Rash gards are great too because they dry quickly under a life vest.
As far as bait containers, I use a simple bucket from k mart or wallmart called "Flo-n-troll." Just $5.00 or so, these things hold 4 to 5 pieces of live bait and buches of fresh dead handed to you from a scoop. They, hold more but dont expect it to keep them alive unless you want to drag it around as you paddle. I lift it up once I make a few pieces and head to my hunting grounds. Then drop it back in and fish. It is primitive but effective.
In closing, be safe. IF you want to test the effectiveness of wearing waders in water test them. Better yet, let weekend the "expert" jump in the pool with them. Let him fill the waders with water, "bonk" himself on the head with a bat to simulate a kayak blow in high/rolling surf and fill them with sand too. The outcome is a dicegame. I am a fisherman but I only gamble in Las Vegas and off track wagering centers, not with my life.
Wear a life vest, relax, fish hard and maintain a TL.
Sincerely,
Anacapabob
