I've had alot of fun with roof racks
I didn't want to skimp, so I tried mako saddles and hully rollers, then the kayak stacker
I gave up on the saddles and rollers. I didn't like positioning the boat keel down; keel up is more aerodynamic and keel down made me REAL nervous on the freeway.
Even worse, the hull on my OK Aegean didn't sit well on the saddles or rollers. I could either put 'em close together under the keel, in which case I couldn't route the straps, or the keel would extend between the saddles and hit the bar.
Then I tried the stacker, but the tower's too short. The Aegean is 34" wide, and, standing on its side, I couldn't get it to stand stably next to the tower. Same for my 28" wide Cobra Tourer.
The fancy stuff seems designed for sit-inside boats.
Bottom line; I use the bars and pads and put one or both boats keel up on the pads. I strap to the bars and make sure at least one strap goes through a scupper hole. I also use ropes to tie bow and stern to the bumpers.
