Absolute newbie who is cravin to learn!

I have vast exp. in saltwater fishing, but I would like to try kayak fishing. I am 6' 1" and weigh a "slim" 250. If you could help me out with kayak selection (i.e. width, length, etc...) that would be wonderful.
Also, I live in oceanside, ca. and would like to know if anyone would want to buddy up in that area. I catch on extremely quick, so my learning curve on the water will be of minimal time.
Do I need a fish finder, or would it be a waste of money compared to a flasher unit.
ANY HELP WOULD BE WELCOME.
