: I was wondering how you guys make bait. I've been yak fishing for about a year now and never made bait. I usually fish the harbors that sell bait and I use mostly lures. I am headed out to san elijo state beach for a full week(camping)and need some pointers on how to make bait. what tackle is envolved and where to look. Appreciate any info you guys give me
Start out with a good bait making rig. Basically a bunch of hooks with tiny flies on them. Like a lot of people, I use the Sabiki bait rigs. I prefer using their size 8 with the pink flies. They run for about $4.50 per rig. A 2oz torpedo weight is usually enough but if you're moving/drifting, you may want to use 4oz (what ever works for the conditions).
Sonar helps find the bait schools when they're not hitting the surface. If you see a few bait boils, toss the rig out and jig it up and down (raise rod tip up and back down to horizontal). A good place to look for bait is around the kelp beds. Drift along side lowering the sabiki at various depths, jigging the various depths until you hook up.
If you're using sonar, they're easy to spot when they're in bait balls. Just drop your rig to what you would estimate is the equal to the depth the sonar is metering. Jig through the column.
It's a good idea to keep jigging slowly through the strikes so you can be sure to pull up a few. When one gets hooked on, it entices others to follow.
Be careful with the hooks! They will hook on to anything they come in contact with.
