how to make bait. need some pointers

I was wondering how you guys make bait. I've been yak fishing for about a year now and never made bait. I usually fish the harbors that sell bait and I use mostly lures. I am headed out to san elijo state beach for a full week(camping)and need some pointers on how to make bait. what tackle is envolved and where to look. Appreciate any info you guys give me
