Defjack is right.
I have launched a 12.5 foot (same length as my FnD) hard plastic skiff through the waves every where from Northern cal to Cabo, and my kayak is WAY easier.
I never was bothered by the lifeguards, except to be told that I needed a B.C.D. to go scuba diving. I hate 'em, so never got one. Had to be crafty to get out sometimes.
Also was silly and did Catalina, but that's another story. Catalina makes a lot more sense in a modern SOT, but they didn't exist when I was a kid.
Things are easy now.
