Ric,
Sorry I will not be at Crowley.
I use a Daiwa M-TWO salmon mooching reel with 18 pound lead core. I troll broken back rapalas and regular rapalas. The dive plane on the rapala helps get some of the depth, however the 18 lb leadcore and the ultra slow trolling ability you can get on a kayak can get you deep.
I know that I have been 80 feet on 9 colors, because I snagged and came up with weeds and was using sonar in that area. Even if the bottom gunk was 5 feet deep, that is still 75 feet. I have broken off deeper.
I tie the most hideous looking knot onto a swivle and then 3 feet of 4 lb flourocarbon straight to the rapala.
If I was going to drop a needle fish or fly, I'd have the guy at the shop tie 6 feet of leader on. He had some tricky knot last time that I could not even begin to copy. He feed the leader up through the outer sleave of the leadcore then tied some sort of double uni knots.
Without a sinking rapal or dive plane, I am not sure how deep you will get, but it should be deeper than 35. The faster you troll the less drop you get and I think the 35 foot range is average for motor boats.
If you can take it back for 18 lb, I have had all of my success on 18 lb. Since you do not have a mooching reel, you can use a Penn 140, 200 or 500. The mooching reel is better for the almost non existant fight.
Forget about spinning reels, they will kink the line and they don't have the capacity.
