I received an email from Mrs.Real and decided to share some of the information. Sammy has been rotated into Iraq and is supporting helicopter operations. There have been some aircraft losses due to the nature of the environment and operating conditions. He is doing well but is anxious to get back to his wife and family.
Sammy is now due to rotate stateside sometime near the beginning of August. This is a difficult time during any conflict. We are transitioning from a declared war with open conflict into post war operations or as the vernacular goes MOOTW (Military Operations Other Than War). The ROE (Rules Of Engagement) is changing. This is the time where it is hardest to maintain vigilance and not become complacent, and consequently one of the most dangerous. While it appears that Sammy is not in a front line unit, he does support helicopter operations in Iraq. There is still the issue of fanatic attackers, telling the good a guy from the bad is hideously difficult. There are people whom will attempt to place US troops in situations where any action they take i.e. protecting themselves will result in tragedies that will be used as propaganda to inflame Arab sentiments.
This is when it is easy to forget that we still have a massive number of troops on the ground in Iraq and the in the region. The temperature is getting hotter everyday. Imagine having to lay on top of a helicopter in the brutal sun as sweat rolls into your eyes while you try to repair an nearly inaccessible component. The metal skin of the helicopter gets so hot it burns unprotect human skin. The life of the people who fly in this vibrating mix of metal parts flying in loose formation depend on your skills and most of all your attention to detail so that they have a chance to come back alive. But too often the helicopter does not come back, now you lay awake wondering if it was something you did or didn't do. Was it your fault, could you have done something different? This is Sammy's life right now. All he wants to do is get back home to his wife and family but he has a job to do.
I urge you to support Sammy and all of our troops, whether you agree to the premise of the war or not. They have taken an oath to support their country and they do so with HONOR.
